Color Forecasting

Color Forecasting, what is it? It is simply predicting the color stories that consumers will want to purchase in the near future.

Have you ever noticed how all of a sudden everything in retail is in grays, yellows or blues?

Everywhere in the industry, including fashion, design, home decor, textiles, and paints are all forecasted up to seven years in advance. By now you are wondering, How do they pick the colors. It is not by chance, there are a few factors to be considered when picking the industry colors for the year.

Surprisingly enough, the color influences are chosen due to the socio-cultural and economic factors in our society. Colors usually stay in play for one or two seasons. Sometimes they will roll over to the next season in a different tone. For example, a few years ago Pantone’s color of the year was royal blue, the next season it was navy.

I love colors, I prefer to have colors all around me. It does not matter what color, however I do prefer bright colors over pastels. I like the high energy that bright colors give off, it is what I feed on. Color is a big part of my life, it influences my mood and creates a feeling.

I have had clients in the past, who cannot commit to a specific color. I generally suggest using neutral tones for larger pieces of furniture, and then add accessories or textiles with splashes of color. This enables you to be more flexible with the forecasted colors.
